Preparing Your Maryland Home for Hurricane & Storm Season

By November 20th, 2025No Comments5 min read

Maryland’s hurricane and storm season brings real risks for Bay-area homeowners. With the Chesapeake shoreline, rivers and low-lying cities like Baltimore, even tropical storms can trigger flooding and fierce winds. We all remember Hurricane Isabel in 2003 – it knocked out power to over a million homes and caused major flooding along the Bay. More recently, the remnants of Hurricane Ida in 2021 flooded streets and uprooted trees across central Maryland. Preparing your home before hurricane season hits isn’t about fear, it’s about smart planning. Here’s what that looks like.

Build an Emergency Kit

Start with a go-bag or bin that holds essentials for at least three days. Stock it with:

  • One gallon of water per person per day
  • Non-perishable food like canned goods, granola bars, or peanut butter
  • Manual can opener, flashlights, and batteries
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • First aid kit and prescription medications
  • Copies of ID, insurance, and bank documents
  • Cash (in case ATMs are down)

If you have pets or young children, include what they need too, formula, diapers, leashes, or carriers. Keep everything in a waterproof container stored near an exit.

Inspect Your Roof and Exterior

Check your roof for loose or damaged shingles and any signs of wear along flashing, vents, and skylights. High winds can pull off shingles or let water seep in if the flashing isn’t secure. Reinforce or seal weak points with roofing cement or caulk. Walk around your house and inspect siding, gutters, and trim. Replace missing pieces and re-secure anything that could rip away during a storm. If you have a garage, make sure the door is reinforced, high winds can blow in a weak door and damage the roof from inside.

Clear Gutters and Downspouts

Backed-up gutters can turn a thunderstorm into a basement flood fast. Remove leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts, and drains around your home. Extend downspouts to carry water at least several feet away from your foundation. Secure all gutter hangers tightly so they don’t tear off in strong wind. Good drainage outside the home can prevent water damage inside it.

Trim Trees and Secure Your Yard

Walk your property and look for low-hanging branches or dead limbs, especially those near the house or power lines. Trim back anything that could fall or break off. If you’ve got a large tree that’s leaning or looks weak, call a tree professional. In past storms, many of the worst damages came from falling trees or branches, not wind alone.

Put away or tie down lawn furniture, grills, trash bins, and anything else the wind could grab. Even lightweight objects can become dangerous if they’re airborne.

Protect Important Documents

Gather insurance paperwork, IDs, medical records, bank details, and store them in a waterproof, fireproof lockbox. Also scan or take photos of these documents and upload them to secure cloud storage. If you have time, take photos or videos of your home and valuables for documentation in case you need to file a claim.

Make a Family Plan

Discuss where your family will go if you need to evacuate, and how to get in touch if you’re separated. Keep a written list of contacts and addresses in your emergency kit. Charge phones, battery packs, and radios before the storm. Sign up for local alerts and pay attention to official guidance.

After the Storm

When the weather clears and it’s safe to step outside, inspect your property. Look for missing shingles, leaks, broken windows, downed power lines, or water in the basement. Document any damage before starting cleanup. Cover holes or broken windows with tarps or boards to prevent more damage. Avoid touching downed wires and report them right away.

The best time to prepare for hurricane season is before the first storm hits.
